SEO has come a long way since 1998 when Google was launched. Search engines had existed before that (remember Lycos and AltaVista?) but Google quickly took the search engine experience to the next level. Today, Google's search results include not just a list of websites but also answer boxes, ideas of other things to search for, Knowledge Graph information panels, images, videos, news stories, and more.
The way the results are selected has also evolved massively. Google is now able to use so-called search intent to show the most relevant results for a particular situation - e.g. depending on whether you are looking to buy something or simply researching a topic.
And since 2005, Google has offered personalised search results. So if you and I carry out the same search on Google, we are likely to get different results depending on our previous search history and browsing behaviour.
All of this means that there is now much much more to SEO than simply stuffing your pages full of the keywords you want to rank for. Your website needs to be relevant, useful, easy to use, quick to load, engaging, and authoritative.
